Accommodation on Exmoor

For quality Accommodation on Exmoor look no further than Sundial Guest House.

Sundial House is a 17th Century country cottage and occupies a central position in the moorland village of Wheddon Cross, which at 1,000ft above sea level is the highest village on Exmoor.

The house was built in the early 1630's at the time of the Civil War and takes its name from the large stone sundial set into the front of the house. The sundial was commissioned by a clock and watchmaker who lived here in the 1850's and was carved from local slate by John Norman a school teacher from the nearby village of Winsford.

The house is set in attractive gardens and has panoramic views over the Exmoor countryside. On a fine evening you can sit in the gardens and enjoy spectacular sunsets over Dunkery Beacon, which at 1750 feet is the highest point on Exmoor.

The dining room is spacious with individual tables and has an outlook over the gardens and surrounding countryside. The room has a warm, relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy wholesome home cooking, using best quality local produce whenever possible. It is also a chance to catch up with the other guests and chat over the days activities.

Flocks of sheep running through the village are a common sight, but as rural as we are, our small village boasts a post office, general store, hairdressing salon, village inn and restaurant, a garage and even a floodlit tennis court.

Local points of interest include our parish church of St John the Evangelist, an 11th century Norman Church which is mentioned in the Doomsday Book, and the livestock market which holds regular sheep and cattle auctions throughout the year.

For the more energetic there are a number of circular walks from the village, including beautiful Snowdrop Valley. Wildlife abounds on Exmoore and you will often encounter the Red Deer and Exmoor Ponies at close quarters. To help you enjoy this wonderful area to the full, we are happy to lend maps and walking guides.

There is an excellent network of roads across the moor and other places of interest can be reached within an easy drive.
